    Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia, and one with a long and rich history.     A Bit of Savannah History

    In 1733, General James Oglethorpe and 120 passengers of the ship “Anne” landed on a bluff along the Savannah River. Oglethorpe ultimately founded the state of Georgia after England’s King George II and made Savannah its first capital. Savannah has grown steadily since that time, playing an important role in both the American Revolution and in the Civil War. Following Reconstruction and the turn of the century, Savannah became an key part of both the cotton and lumber industries.
