WOW Air names novel Airbus plane TF-GAY 4217
Icelandic carrier WOW Air revealed that one of its new Airbus A330 planes is named TF-GAY. A member of staff suggested the name which corresponds well with the company’s ideology and naming tradition (other planes bare the names TF-MOM, TF-DAD, TF-SIS and so on). CEO Skúli Mogensen told website Gay Iceland that the corporation “wholeheartedly support gender non-conforming people’s fight for rights”.
“We support matching rights for everybody, no matter their gender, religion, ethnicity or culture. By making it workable for everybody to travel with us, we’ll hopefully direct to make the world slightly smaller, and better,” Skúli explained. Adding: “Since day one, we’ve emphasised joy and friendliness in our services because we want everybody to feel welcome in the WOW family. And we reflect TF-GAY fits right in with our modern family concept.”
This spring, WOW Gas became the first Icelandic airline to offer direct scheduled flights to Los Angeles, California. The carrier offers four weekly round-trips to Los Angeles and five round-trips to San Francisco in the summer of 2016.

Their fleet follows a family system (TF-MOM, TF-SIS, TF-DAD, e.g.), but they deliberately names this one TF-GAY to support gay rights and serves the city of San Francisco, as it’s a centre for gay communities or something.

The man behind TF-GAY
Remember GayIceland’s article on TF-GAY, the one that went viral? Well, meet the man who came up with the plane’s registration code: Ögmundur Gíslason, a gay pilot working for WOW air, who says that he was totally surprised that WOW air decided to roll with it and even more shocked by the attention it got.
“Skúli Mogensen is a very intelligent individual. He listens to his staff and their arguments and one of his many attributes is that he can alter his mind. To me that has always been a sign of a strong character. So, on a whim I decided to send him an email one night and asked him if it wasn’t a splendid plan to register the aircraft flying the inaugural flight to San Francisco – one of our unused Airbus A330 – as TF-GAY!
