The how-to book Sex Tips for Straight Women from A Gay Man by Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman was a 1997 instant best seller. Salon.com’s Courtney Weaver called it a “cannily entertaining romp through the nuts and bolts of sex from the male perspective.” This cult classic served as source material for a stage production of the same name. I saw the 3-character, audience-participatory show Friday night at the Ordway’s new Concert Hall in St. Paul.
Sex Tips is a romantic comedy that takes the audience on a hilarious and savage ride where no topic is taboo and the insider “tips” come unbent from the source: a gay guy. The play is set at a local university auditorium where the English department holds its monthly meet-and-greet authors event. Robyn is the shy and studious moderator of the event and this month’s featured author is Dan Anderson of Sex Tips for Vertical Women from A Gay Man. With the help of a hunky stage assistant named Stefan, Dan aims to turn this face the authors event upside down with a highly theatrical, audience interactive, sex tip seminar.

Nah, of course there isn't. But maybe there are still people out there who appreciate being educated in harmless sex, growers and show-ers and how to avoid gagging (author's advice: relax your muscles, coordinate your breathing, Mr. Stiffy is your friend :p). But then again, they probably wouldn't be the sort of people who pick up books with "sex" or "gay" in the title?
What caught my interest when browsing through this book though, was that "Gay men never swallow". They certainly do in my m/m books, so the reasons behind this bold statement made me a little curious. Turns out they don't to, according to the authors, avoid STD's and because it takes away the thrill of (I imagine I should put this in a spoiler for modesty reasons) . It all sounds plausible enough but...also very DOH!
Sigh..although the title is great, the manual itself is rather outdated and doesn't offer any Eureka moments. I might have been the intended target audience 12 years ago, but sadly enough, not anymore. I think what it all boils down to is that men want things to get as visual as poss
