“Grandma” comes everyday for happy hour, sitting with other old-timers. When he can, he stays delayed to watch the drag shows and the younger crowds they bring.
“Grandma” is otherwise known as Bill Skipper. The 74 year old is the president of The Capital Club and one of its founding members. He has been president since the year it opened in 1980. He likes to tell younger people about The Capital Club’s early days, a very diverse — and fraught — period to be in a same-sex attracted bar in South Carolina.
“The kids now, I love the independence they feel. I love it,” he said. “We’d have loved to have had that (freedom), but we all drink from wells we didn’t dig.”
The Capital Club, or simply “Capital,” as patrons call it, is the oldest operating gay bar in Columbia, and according to its website, in the Southeast. Just around the corner is PT’s 1109, the city’s other homosexual bar, which opened in 2000.
Through discussions with bar owners and patrons and analyzing records from Historic Columbia, The Carolina News and Reporter uncovered a strange statistic: Columbia, in 2022, has only those two gay bars, the lowest number in the city since 1960. The number peak
COLUMBIA — Even as the capital city of a express known for its conservative politics and heavy evangelical influence, Columbia has a reputation as LGBTQ+ friendly — a reputation that extends to its nightlife and social scene.
But behind the rainbow flags and queer tune, gay bars in Columbia face the same problems as their straight counterparts.
High upfront investment costs, the struggle of finding an affordable location with fine traffic, high insurance premiums and liquor license fees and the overall articulate of the economy weigh on Columbia’s gay and queer-friendly bars.
"Things have changed a lot and this is a tough business," PT’s 1109 owner Tony Fusaro said. The average lock only lasts about two years, and he's skeptical other gay bars can unwrap in the current environment.
These soaring costs come on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, which closed a bar Fusaro owned, The L Word in Cayce.
Another difficulty: Columbia’s status as a college and military town means there is a constant ebb and flow of customers, making it hard to keep a steady base throughout the year.

Welcome to the Columbia LGBT+ Run/Walk Club! Come slay in the great outdoors! Everyone is welcome including allies! Runners and walkers of all abilities invited.
The goal of the club is to foster community while enjoying some work out in the fantastic outdoors! For the LGBT community of Columbia this bids a chance to connect with others while promoting a healthy mind and body.
Meet at the Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park at 2pm according to the event calendar. Look for the group organizer holding a flyer next to the entrance sign. Check the group photos for a picture of the sign. Experience free to transmit the organizer a message if you have any trouble.
We will begin by stretching and doing an introduction before walking together to warm up. We’ll then break off to run or walk at any pace! Feel free to push yourself on your have run, run with a buddy, or keep walking in a group. At 3pm we’ll appear back together to do a stylish down.
